What is the Billfish Tournament about?

The tournament is held every year in October and officially kicks off the season of sport fishing tournaments in Los Cabos.

When will the tournament be?

The Billfish tournament will be held from 13 to 17 October in Cabo San Lucas.

This 2019, the tournament will celebrate its twenty-first edition and promises to be a very special event for both participants and spectators, as it will promote the capture and release of marlins.

Why Los Cabos?

Cabo San Lucas is known for being the marlin fishing capital of the world. In 2011, Los Cabos witnessed the largest ever blue marlin fishery, which weighed no less than 550 kg.

Due to its excellent geographical conditions, Baja California Sur doesn’t have to wait for the fishing season, since fishing abounds all year round, although species do vary. Here sport fishing is a recreational activity for anyone who wants to venture out to sea.

However, October is the favorite time for fishing enthusiasts from all over the world to visit Los Cabos.

During this period, Cabo San Lucas vibrates high day and night, and both hotels and fishing boats are hard to book, so keep this in mind and book them in advance.

Another reason Los Cabos hosts the Billfish tournament is because of the many entertainment options it offers  tourists, many come specifically to attend the tournament and others just to vacation, but everyone expects to take home memorable experiences, and that’s something Los Cabos never fails to deliver.

In addition to attending the tournament, in Los Cabos you can also see the famous Arch, you can  take adrenalin-filled ATV rides through the desert, or you can try the camel ride. Your options are not limited to this as there are many more activities that celebrate the nature of this special corner of the world.

Who attends the Billfish tournament?

Every year the tournament attracts hundreds of boats from all over the world who are looking to win the grand prize. Among them, visitors from the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and also from other cities in Mexico.

In its beginnings in 1981, only 6 teams participated in the tournament, but currently the Billfish Tournament has already pre-registered 300 teams.

Each team is made up of 1 to 6 anglers (base rate) and as the number of teams increases, so does the final sum.

Not only fishing fans attend the tournament, tourists who are passing through Cabo rent yachts and take the opportunity to join the fun.
